Full Job Description

The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) is hiring a Criminal Justice Trainer 2 at our SW Regional Academy in Vancouver, WA.

In this role you will deliver quality instruction in our Basic Law Enforcement Academy Programs in accordance with federal and state laws, model policies, and agency curriculum to recruit officers in an academy setting.

In this position, you’ll serve as both a role model and instructor, upholding the WSCJTC’s core values of leadership, integrity, dignity, and accountability as you carry out the duties of this position.

Requirements

Duties assigned to this position include (but are not limited to):

  • Facilitate instruction, including classroom, practical, and mock scenarios.
  • Act as an Assistant TAC Officer of BLEA classes, sometimes multiple concurrent classes.
  • Train and mentor students guided by WSCJTC agency values.
  • Maintain order within the academy atmosphere, including motivating classes as a group and students individually.
  • Support contracted TAC Officers in leading academy classes.
  • Mentor and support onboarding part-time contractors.
  • Support contracted TAC Officers with day-to-day questions, issues, and tasks by providing direct assistance, guidance, and instruction as is necessary.
  • Communicate with student employing agencies regarding performance, attendance, coordination of additional training needs, test failures and remedial training.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications/Experience:

  • At least three (3) years of experience as a certified peace officer (law enforcement or military) or certified (city, county, municipality) corrections officer in an assignment that may require the application of physical force.

-OR-

  • At least three (3) years of experience as a trainer of certified criminal justice personnel (law enforcement or corrections/juvenile corrections (city, county, municipality)), specifically in the areas of firearms, control/defensive tactics, de-escalation, or patrol tactics.

-OR-

  • At least one (1) year of experience as a WSCJTC Criminal Justice Trainer 1 and three (3) years of experience training, mentoring, and/or coaching others in physical or tactical training areas such as martial arts, firearms, self-defense, military combative courses, etc.
  • Understanding of adult teaching and learning methods.
  • No sustained use of force complaints in the past three (3) years.
  • Any community complaints in the last three (3) years must be satisfactorily explained.
  • Able to model the Guardian Philosophy of policing in class on a daily basis.
  • Strong work ethic, self-directed, and able to work in a team-teaching environment.
  • Ability to support the agency's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
  • Effective communication skills.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Understanding of and/or experience with WSCJTC protocols and chain of command.
  • First level supervisor experience (examples: sergeant, supervisor, manager).
  • WSCJTC Instructor Development - 2 (ID2) certification.
  • Skills for basic computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of training and instruction principles, content and methodology.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development.
  • Problem solving skills, including analysis and strategies.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system including federal, state, and local criminal justice agencies, laws, ordinances and regulations.
  • Knowledge of cultural diversity/implicit bias.
  • Effective at developing and utilizing resources.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Complete First Level Supervision Course within (1) one year of employment.
  • Attend or audit all BLEA and BLEEA instruction within (1) one year of employment.
  • Complete the following Train-the-Trainer and Instructor Development Courses within (2) two years of employment:
    1. Patrol Tactics Instructor
    2. Draeger Instructor Basic
    3. SFST Instructor Development
    4. ABLE Train-the-Trainer
    5. Below 100 Train-the-Trainer.
