The Washington State Department of Corrections is hiring a Corrections Specialist 2 (CS2) within the Reentry Division - CBI Unit. This position (#C962) performs work at both Clallam Bay Corrections Center (CBCC) in Clallam Bay, WA and Olympic Corrections Center (OCC) in Forks, WA. The working schedule for this position is Monday - Friday, 7:30 - 4:00 p.m. Schedule may be adjusted based on participant availability, and work hours are subject to change.

The Reentry Division is responsible for the implementation of evidenced-based practices and the operational support to facilitate incarcerated individuals' participation in and/or to provide evidence-based and research-based interventions and promising practices/programs designed to decrease recidivism, while increasing the safety of staff, participants, incarcerated individuals and the public.

The Department of Corrections, in collaboration with its criminal justice partners, will contribute to staff and community safety and hold incarcerated individuals accountable by conducting appropriate screenings, assessments and evaluations to assess the risk and needs of the population and by providing services to address the risks and needs across the continuum in the least restrictive setting needed to ensure protection of staff, participant, incarcerated individuals and the public.

Participants will be held accountable through the classification system and the administration of sanctions and reinforcers to effect change.

The Corrections Specialist 2 (CS2) contributes to the Department's mission and vision by providing expertise and technical assistance to ensure delivery of Cognitive Behavioral Interventions in alignment with evidence-based practices; address participants risks, needs and behaviors; and support participant success in both prison and community-based programming as well as reentry.

The Corrections Specialist 2 will facilitate evidence-based programs, which target criminogenic needs, to higher risk incarcerated individuals.

These programs provide participants with opportunities to engage in cognitive self-change in order to develop skills needed to enhance social abilities and improve problem solving.

With participant development of these skills, participants may think in ways that change their actions which lead to safer communities and safer correctional operations.

This Corrections Specialist 2 will work collaboratively with other DOC programs and contract providers.

Quality assurance involves the ongoing and accurate monitoring and tracking of reliable measures of program and intervention implementation.

This position will actively participate in the quality assurance process.

Requirements

As a Corrections Specialist 2, some of your duties will include:

Provide professional delivery of all Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CBI’s) within the inventory of the Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CBI) Unit to participants within the facility:

  • Screens and assigns participants to designated CBI Program using approved criteria.
  • Schedule and enter callouts for multiple sessions.
  • Facilitate multiple sessions of CBI group programming to participants as a single facilitator and/or as a lead facilitator with other trained support facilitation staff.
  • Administer the program as dictated in the approved intervention handbook.
  • Observe and monitor participant participation and provide feedback on the lesson by providing positive reinforcement and additional coaching as needed.
  • Schedule and facilitate make-up sessions as necessary and in accordance with the program requirements.

Communicate with stakeholders on the status of ongoing CBI’s within the facility:

  • Work collaboratively with classification staff and other stakeholders regarding the status of the program and the participants involved, including participant progress, safety issues, attendance, behavioral issues or life issues which impact participation.
  • Participates in Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings for participants falling below participation requirements or for any corrective interventions per the CBI staff handbook behavioral section.
  • Notify the CBI Fidelity Unit the required details for each CBI class prior to its start date.

Document individuals’ participation:

  • Upon determination of the final participant list for the program, enter the OMNI Programs information or ensure that the necessary details are provided to the staff who enters OMNI Programs/RPM Coordinator information
  • Document participant attendance in OMNI Programs for each session, inclusive of absences and make up sessions
  • Completes and documents participant evaluations in OMNI on individuals attending the class to include: class participation, homework completion, engagement in role plays, and other behavioral requirements as necessary.
  • Document in OMNI all behavioral responses in accordance with the intervention handbook.
  • Upon approval for termination, document in OMNI Programs the participant’s removal from the program. Include the reason for termination as well as the approving authority.
  • Document in OMNI Programs the participants’ completion of the program as well as related certificates earned.

Participate in and complete all scheduled training/coaching sessions for CBI programs and successfully demonstrate mastery of material within prescribed timelines:

  • Attend and successfully complete the initial CBI facilitator training as scheduled.
  • Upon determination of a new program offering, attend and successfully complete the new program training as scheduled.
  • Attend and participate in CBI Fidelity Unit assessment, feedback, coaching and booster sessions to reinforce/improve skills in program delivery.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Satisfactory completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S.

Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent AND three (3) years of professional experience in adult or juvenile corrections, social services or closely related field

OR

High school diploma, GED or equivalency AND three (3) years of professional experience in adult or juvenile corrections, social services or closely related field with at least two (2) of those years involved in the direct delivery or facilitation of evidence-based programming such as Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions

In addition to at least one of the above, this position requires demonstrated competency in the following areas (competency may be gained through education, experience, or a combination thereof):

  • Facilitator Skills - Demonstrates empathy, facilitation/teaching techniques, understanding of group processes and interpersonal interactions, and the ability to control a group of incarcerated individual participants through non-coercive means.
  • Community Relationships - Participates in the formation and maintenance of successful relationships with criminal justice partners and community resources.
  • Observation - Observes and strategizes personal response based on environmental conditions and human behavior.
  • Stress Tolerance - Remains calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to, volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations. Expertly intervenes in response to threats.
  • Adaptability - Incorporates new information into an existing framework of understanding. Accepts change and supports the Agency through changes in law, policy and procedure.

Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; Familiarity with Washington State databases including OMNI.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and understanding of evidence-based treatment delivery practices.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Risk Needs Responsivity principles.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complete a felony disclosure form prior to employment and submit to a criminal background check.
  • Successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual in-service and other required training.
  • Provide physical residential address and home telephone number to the Department of Corrections.
  • Become familiar and comply with all Department policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Submit to drug testing in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement and agency policy.

  • Possess and maintain a vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Washington.
