Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing inmate records, assigning them to programs or jobs, counseling them on their adjustment to prison life, and tracking their progress in a correctional facility.

It requires managing a group of about 250 inmates fairly and communicating with officials about their status.

A good fit would be someone with experience in administration or corrections who is organized, empathetic, and comfortable working in a prison environment.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or associate's degree plus one year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma plus two years of administrative/correctional experience
  • Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody changes, employment, and treatment programs
  • Skills in coordinating and implementing a fair classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates
  • Conduct periodic reviews, interviews, and progress evaluations with inmates
  • Provide counseling to inmates on institutional adjustment and related problems
  • Respond to inquiries from departmental officials and other agencies via oral or written communication
  • Proficiency in operating computers to access inmate social, criminal, educational, and family histories
  • Must successfully complete four weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire

Full Job Description

  • Evaluates inmates’ records to determine eligibility for institutional assignments, custody changes, employment, and treatment program.
  • Coordinates and implements an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates.
  • Conducts periodic reviews and evaluates inmates' progress. Interview’s inmates discusses and records progress made on a periodic basis.
  • Counsels with inmates regarding their general institutional adjustment or related problems.
  • Responds orally and/or through written correspondence to inquiries for Information on inmates by departmental officials and other agencies.
  • Operates the computer to ascertain information pertaining to inmates social, criminal, educational and family histories.
Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree;

OR

  • An associate's degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience;

OR

  • A high school diploma and any two (2) years combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
