Job Description

Summary

This job involves hands-on maintenance and repair of city buildings and facilities, such as fixing HVAC systems, doing carpentry, plumbing, and painting to keep public spaces in good shape.

It also includes leading less experienced workers on projects and performing preventive upkeep.

A good fit would be someone with several years of practical experience in building trades who enjoys working independently and guiding a team.

Full Job Description

This is highly skilled and lead work involving the maintenance and repair of city buildings and other facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of a designated supervisor.

The employee is expected to give guidance and direction to less experienced or seasonal employees and may serve as a crew leader on special projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs a variety of heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment; calibrates and adjusts equipment and assures proper functioning.
  • Performs rough and finished carpentry work, such as installing paneling, cabinets, drywall, flooring, framing, and shelves in public buildings and facilities.
  • Repairs and replaces roofs, repairs and fabricates ventilation ducts, gutters, and spouts.
  • Repairs and replaces doors, windows, walls, ceilings, floors and performs locksmith duties.
  • Builds forms, pours and finishes concrete; repairs concrete structures; lays bricks and makes repairs to brick walls.
  • Performs plumbing work; repairs faucets, commodes, water heaters and valves; maintains and repairs sprinkling systems and equipment related to swimming pools and splash pads.
  • Prepares and paints walls, floors, ceilings; builds shelves, bulletin boards, display cases and the like; repairs desks, tables, chairs, other furniture, and machinery.
  • Operates a variety of standard power tools and equipment in grounds and building maintenance and repair activities on a regular basis.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on buildings, appliances, plumbing and electrical fixtures.
  • Maintains records and logs, as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Training and Experience
  • High School diploma (or GED equivalent)
--AND--
  • Five (5) years of experience in a variety of trades or construction work.
--OR--
  • Any combination of equivalent training and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Michigan driver’s license
  • Experience or Licensure in Heating Service and Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Servicing
