About the Position

This position supports the Department’s structural engineering program by assisting in the analysis, design, and delivery of highway structures, as well as contributing to the development and implementation of structural standards and specifications.

The role helps ensure consistency with Department practices, including bridge design manuals, standard plans, and construction specifications, while collaborating with internal staff and external partners to support project delivery.

Under the guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer, this position applies established engineering principles to support the design of new bridge construction and the rehabilitation and repair of existing structures.

The role develops technical knowledge of Department standards and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) code, while building experience in structural engineering practices within a transportation environment.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following
  • Analyze, design, and detail routine bridge and highway structure elements under the guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer
  • Perform engineering calculations to evaluate structural strength, stability, and performance for bridges, signs, and signal structures using design standards and engineering software
  • Assist in the preparation of structural plans, details, quantities, and specifications, and develop design information for plan production
  • Review routine structural designs for compliance with applicable standards, including the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications and Department manuals
  • Support structural load rating activities for new and existing bridges
  • Participate in project meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery and gather design and rating information
  • Assist with structure selection and design studies by evaluating safety, cost, constructability, and durability considerations
  • Provide construction support by assisting with field reviews, interpreting plans and specifications, reviewing shop drawings, and helping resolve field issues
  • Assist with inspection of fabricated structural components and support coordination with construction and maintenance personnel
  • Participate in field engineering activities to observe site conditions, support inspections, and develop an understanding of structural behavior and performance
  • Support structural asset management efforts by assisting with identifying, scoping, and prioritizing structural needs, and retrieving and reporting program data
  • Assist with bridge inspections and asset management activities, including supporting NBI-related efforts and preparing reports
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of structural standards and specifications
  • Participate in training, self-study, and professional development to build knowledge of structural engineering practices, materials, and Department standards
Work Environment
  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met.
  • Initially in office attendance is required, during probationary period, with potential to work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.
  • Approximately 10% spent in the field, 90% spent in the office
  • Travel required during work hours throughout Metro Denver/Front Range
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Exerts up to 50lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10lbs. of force regularly to move objects
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.
  • Exposure to nonweather-related hot and cold temperatures.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

Substitution:

  • Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the enrollment as an Engineer Intern.

  • A current valid driver’s license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.


Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of bridge design experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with structural engineering emphasis;
  • Maintaining current working knowledge of engineering processes, theories, laws, principles, conceptual models, and best practices;
  • Knowledge and experience in structural design and analysis;
  • Knowledge and experience with the engineering design and construction of highway structures;
  • Familiarity with the CDOT Bridge Design, Rating and Detailing Manuals and working drawings;
  • Familiarity with the AASHTO Bridge Specifications;
  • Familiarity or experience with National Bridge Inventory (NBI) and Highway Bridge Replacement & Rehabilitation programs;
  • Knowledge and experience in soil mechanics and foundation design;
  • Computer aided drafting knowledge and experience;
  • Ability to partner with professionals, consultants, vendors, stakeholders and staff, with sensitivity to their needs and priorities;
  • Attention to technical details and accuracy;
  • A passion for safety and service to the public;
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, and communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;

  • Experience with geotech software and "structural design software;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail, SAP, CAD programs and ability to quickly learn other software systems.
