Summary

This bailiff role in a major felony court in Indianapolis involves supporting the judge by managing daily court schedules, handling paperwork and updates in the case system, and coordinating with criminal justice partners on inmate matters.

It also includes assisting during trials, managing juries, serving as a backup court reporter, and responding to public inquiries.

A good fit would be someone organized and detail-oriented with strong communication skills, who can work well in a team and interact with diverse people, even without prior legal experience.

Full Job Description

The Marion Superior Court (Indianapolis) is comprised of thirty-six courts across the Criminal, Civil and Family Divisions. Major felony courts regularly handle criminal cases such as murder, drug offenses, sex offenses, major domestic violence matters and various gun charges.

A bailiff is needed to assist the judge with managing daily case dockets, as well as perform tasks related to motions practice and coordination with various criminal justice partners. 

This is NOT a security position.

Requirements

1. Perform as part of a five-person court staff with daily duties regarding case maintenance and general office operation.

2. Assist during various court hearings, including limited remote hearings, bench and jury trials, which includes the management of juries. 

4. Conduct individual case updating on the court’s case management system, which includes the daily processing of motions and orders, as well as other tasks as directed by judge.

5. Coordinate with the county and state criminal justice partners on various inmate supervision, transport and release and issues.

6. Serve as the alternate court reporter when the full-time court reporter is unavailable.

7. Respond to inquiries via telephone and email, assisting with requests as needed.

8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A minimum of a high school diploma or HSE is required. 

Proven typing and data entry skills are necessary. 

Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential, as is strong attention to detail. 

Ability to effectively interact with diverse groups of individuals. 

Knowledge and understanding of legal terminology and criminal procedures is preferred but not required. 

Salary is based on applicable experience. Employees work at 37.5-hour week. Full benefits are available.

Bi-lingual skills in Spanish, Burmese, or Haitian Creole are beneficial, with a bi-lingual salary enhancement available. Educational enhancements for an Associate's or bachelor’s degree are also available.
