Summary

This job involves leading teams of workers who build, fix, and maintain city sidewalks, pavements, walls, bridges, and other public structures, while handling scheduling, inspections, and emergency tasks like snow removal.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Four years of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of concrete sidewalks, pavements, walls, footings, and abutments
  • At least one year of supervisory experience
  • Advanced training in civil engineering principles for street maintenance and construction (preferred)
  • Ability to schedule work, assign tasks, and manage staffing, materials, and equipment
  • Skills in inspecting work progress, handling personnel issues, and processing citizen complaints
  • Availability to serve as emergency supervisor for street salting and snow removal

Full Job Description

Under general supervision, supervises groups of employees engaged in constructing, installing, repairing, and maintaining sidewalks, railroad crossing pavement, retaining walls, fences, bridges, docks and other structures; erecting viewing stands, setting up barricades, wrecking buildings and performing a variety of other diverse activities.

Requirements

1. Visits sites of proposed projects.

2. Determines staffing, materials, and equipment requirements.

3. Schedules work and assigns assignments.

4. Checks work in progress and upon completion.

5. Handles work and personnel problems.

6. Advises intermediate supervisors and subordinates on necessary corrections or procedures to utilize in the performance of tasks.

7. Ensures that work schedules are maintained and makes reassignments in order to handle emergency or slack time tasks.

8. Confers with departmental officials and others.

9. Prepares or reviews time slips, store requisitions, activities reports and other records.

10. Processes complaints from citizens involving sidewalk maintenance or other activities handled by subordinate personnel.

11. Serves as emergency supervisor on street salting and snow removal work and also as an area supervisor for such activities, as required. 

Qualifications

High School graduation or GED. Advanced training in civil engineering principles as applied to street maintenance and construction attained through a recognized institution of higher education, preferred.
 Four years of experience in construction, maintenance and repair of concrete and other types of sidewalks, pavements, walls, footings and abutments, including one year of experience in a supervisory capacity.
