The Sheriff’s Office is seeking to establish a pool of qualified candidates for the Armorer. The pool will not be used to fill any immediate vacancies but will instead be utilized to fill future vacancies within the Sheriff's Office. Bureau. The incumbent will perform skilled maintenance and repair firearms. Duties will include inspecting, testing, and modifying weapons as required to ensure compliance with federal and state rules and regulations, regarding weapons specifications. Inspect and test weapons involved in an officer-involved shooting (OIS), attend educational programs and seminars related to weapon maintenance and training to stay current on new armory operations, and other related duties.
The most competitive candidates will have prior Armorer or gunsmith experience.
The Armorer is a non-sworn employee of the Sheriff's Department and reports to a Sheriff's Sergeant. Armorers possess a comprehensive knowledge of the use and repair of all types of firearms used in the department. Maintenance assignments are made according to operating needs and employees skills.

Requirements
• Maintain, diagnose, repair, inspect, and test handguns, rifles, and shotguns authorized for use by the department's sworn staff.
• Conduct follow-up measures on weapons checked out to sworn officers.
• Inspect and test weapons involved in officer-involved shootings (OIS); write and maintain records of inspection and test results; prepare and submit OIS reports.
• Purchase and issue ammunition and maintain a complete and accurate inventory of the department's weapons, ammunition, gun-cleaning supplies, weapon parts, and other equipment.
• Inspect, test, and modify weapons as required to ensure compliance with federal and state rules and regulations regarding weapon specifications.
• Act as a liaison between weapon manufacturers and the department regarding the maintenance and repair of weapons.
• Testify in court as an expert witness regarding weapons involved in crimes and officer-involved shootings.
• Coordinate and schedule training programs involving weapon manufacturers, department staff, and outside agencies.
• Attend educational programs and seminars related to weapon maintenance and training to stay abreast of current and new trends in armory operations.
• Perform yearly on-site inventory of all department weapons; inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain weapons as needed.
Qualifications
OPTION I
Education: High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED).
AND
Experience: One year of experience as an Armorer with a state, federal, county, or city law enforcement agency. Proof of completion must be submitted with the application.
OPTION II
Education: High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED).
AND
Experience: Two years paid experience as a gunsmith or armorer repairing, maintaining, and testing a variety of small firearms, rifles, and/or shotguns. Proof of completion must be submitted with the application.
OPTION III
Education: High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED).
AND
License and Certificates: Any two of the following:
California POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certified Law Enforcement Armorers Certificate. Proof of completion must be submitted with the application.
Law Enforcement Armorers Certificate from a major firearms manufacturer (e.g., Glock, Sig Sauer, Remington, H&K, Springfield, or Colt, etc.). Proof of completion must be submitted with the application.
Certificate of Completion from a reputable gunsmith program. Proof of completion must be submitted with the application.
Knowledge of: Handgun, rifle, and shotgun maintenance and repair; safe and proper handling of a variety of firearms; State, federal, and department codes, rules, and regulations regarding firearm specifications; firearm sighting and marksmanship techniques; basic characteristics of a handgun and shotgun ammunition; methods of instructing others in the proficient use of firearms, and developing related training materials; correct written and verbal usage of the English language, report writing, record keeping, and basic arithmetic.
Ability to: Perform skilled maintenance, repair, and testing on a wide variety of handguns, rifles, shotguns and reloading equipment; exercise independent judgment and work with a minimum of supervision; understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and perform basic arithmetic computations; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ensure the safe handling and discharge of firearms; prepare, record, and maintain accurate and complete departmental reports and inventory records; utilize office equipment including computers; learn, interpret, and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions; respond to inquiries and requests for information from department personnel; exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs; interact effectively and sensitively with individuals from diverse backgrounds; establish, maintain, and foster positive, harmonious, and effective working relationships with department staff, vendors, other jurisdictions, the public, and individuals contacted in the course of work.
Other Requirements
License:
Possession, and maintenance throughout employment, of a valid California Driver's License.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintenance throughout employment, a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Incumbents will be manipulating various firearms, tools, and equipment for extended periods of time from a seated or standing position.
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary to discharge a firearm and for moderate or heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
Incumbents may be required to work rotating shifts.
