is recruiting for an AMYA RPM Life Skills Coordinator

This position is in the General Government (GGU) bargaining unit at a range 16.

This position is open to Alaska Residents only.

What you will be doing:
The Alaska Military Youth Academy (AMYA) offers a unique opportunity to positively impact Alaska's youth by serving as the AMYA RPM Life Skills Coordinator under the supervision of the RPM Supervisor. In this role, you'll model and teach a variety of coping strategies to help cadets manage their emotions and navigate social, behavioral, and academic challenges within a structured, quasi-military environment. Your responsibilities include guiding cadets in developing resilience, responsible decision-making, and healthy communication, all while fostering personal growth and emotional well-being. This position not only supports cadets' development but also provides ongoing growth and learning opportunities for team members, emphasizing a supportive environment where efforts are valued and appreciated.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:
The AMYA RPM Life Skills Coordinator position is located on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) at Camp Carroll. It provides ample parking, beautiful mountain views, trails for breaktime walking or jogging, and access to a no-cost fitness center. The daily work environment is generally indoors, in an office setting, but also involves walking around outside to various buildings on campus and working with the cadets where they are located.

The successful applicants must pass a federal background check in order to qualify for military base access, which is required with this position's work location on base.

The background check will include fingerprinting.

All job offers are conditional pending successful completion of the federal background check and issuance of a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) card allowing base access.

Also, you must be able to maintain the clearance throughout your employment.

If using a private vehicle this will require a valid Alaska Driver License, proof of vehicle insurance, and a valid State of Alaska vehicle registration.

State employees are guests on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson; clearance and access are not within the State's control.

Special Note: In addition, in some cases employees must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).

As part of the examination process, a background check investigation, including a criminal records check, will be conducted. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude appointment.

The circumstances involved in the conviction will be considered.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited college;
AND
Possession of a valid Alaska driver's license.

Substitution:Experience in counseling, interviewing, case management, or work specifically in the behavioral or social services fields may substitute for the required education (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

This experience includes work such as AMYA Team Leader, Senior Team Leader, or Youth Counselor with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, the incoming team member must be willing and able to travel to remote field sites using boats, small aircraft, and helicopters, and be prepared to work in varying weather conditions, in confined areas, and potentially be exposed to wildlife.

Demonstrating your flexibility and experience with such environments will support your application.

  • If you are a current or former State of Alaska employee, provide your last three (3) performance evaluations or if you have never been employed with the State, please provide three (3) professional letters of recommendation if evaluations are unavailable.
  • Three (3) professional references we may contact by phone (must include position titles, and your current supervisor and one former supervisor).

    This should include a complete list of all periods of paid or volunteer work experience relating to working with youth. Must include employer reason for leaving.

  • Only include official college transcripts if using education to meet minimum requirements.
  • Valid Real ID Driver’s License.
  • The information for writing sample will be provided by hiring managers to applicants that have moved to the next phase

Position Specific Requirements:

Must be able to obtain and maintain a DBIDs (Digital Biometric Identification Card).

Must be able to pass an FBI Fingerprint Background and Adam Walsh Check at hire and each 5 years thereafter.

Position Specific Requirements:

This position requires remaining calm while working with highly emotional, at-risk youth in a residential setting. The role demands the ability to manage multiple tasks under high-stress conditions.

Located at AMYA on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Camp Carroll Training Site, the incumbent must pass a security check and follow all base protocols.

Responsibilities include classroom and outdoor interactions during residential cycles, which may involve exposure to wild animals that may enter the campus grounds.

The role requires a non-standard schedule, including evenings, weekends, and potential rotating on-call duties.
