Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading formal hearings for prisoners on issues like misconduct, segregation classification, legal property disputes, visitor restrictions, and high-risk status within Michigan's prison system.

The role requires acting as an impartial judge to review evidence, hear arguments, and make fair decisions.

It's a great fit for licensed attorneys with a few years of legal experience who enjoy detailed administrative work and have strong writing and analytical skills.

Key Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
  • Membership in good standing with the Michigan State Bar
  • Two years of professional legal experience, including one year equivalent to an Administrative Law Examiner 14 or as an attorney (for P15 level)
  • Ability to conduct formal administrative hearings impartially
  • Strong professional business writing skills, demonstrated by a recent sample
  • Experience in legal analysis, evidence review, and decision-making
  • Submission of resume, cover letter, official J.D. transcripts, and writing sample

This position conducts formal administrative hearings for prisoners in the following areas: (1) Misconduct violations (primarily Class I); (2) Classification to segregation; (3) Legal Property; (4) Visitor restrictions; (5) High or very high risk classifications; and (6) Other administrative hearings as assigned.

Requirements

Education

Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.


Experience

Administrative Law Examiner 13

No specific type or amount is required.

Administrative Law Examiner 14

One year of professional experience in legal work equivalent to an Administrative Law Examiner 13 or Administrative Law Specialist 13, or one year of experience as an attorney.

Administrative Law Examiner P15

Two years of professional experience in legal work, including one year equivalent to an Administrative Law Examiner 14 or Administrative Law Specialist 14, or two years of experience as an attorney.

Additional Information

Membership in good standing in the Michigan State Bar.
