Summary

Accounting Technician 1/2!

This position is in the General Government Unit (GGU) at a Range 12/14.

This position is located in Juneau. However, this position may be relocated within Alaska with necessary approvals where infrastructure allows.


What You Will Be Doing:
We support your career growth by offering a clear path to advancement from Accounting Tech 1 to Accounting Tech 2 upon meeting the requirements and completing the training plan (usually within 18 months).

As a part of our Juneau Unemployment Insurance (UI) Tax team, this position provides customer service support to the public by telephone or email, and registers new employers for UI Tax accounts. This position processes Alaska Quarterly Contribution reports and tax payments, researches and updates discrepancies in employer accounts and employee wage records, prepares and processes accounting adjustments and refunds. We work in concert with five field offices located in Juneau, Anchorage, Kenai, Wasilla, and Fairbanks.

The UI Tax unit fosters and promotes the welfare of wage earners by continuously educating employers to report and pay contributions correctly. You will join a team of specialists who register and maintain employer accounts for Alaska’s employers who report their workers’ wages every quarter. These records are used to calculate unemployment taxes and unemployment benefits in accordance with applicable provision of the Alaska Statutes and Regulations.

This position is located at 1111 W 8th St. Room 203, with plenty of parking, near beautiful downtown Juneau with easy break-time access to the Juneau Seawalk. The Juneau Tax team is a small office with many long term employees who work independently and as a team dealing with numbers, but also educate employers and third parties from many different parts of the state and country on reporting wages and paying UI taxes.

Requirements

Accounting Technician Level 1:
One year of clerical work experience maintaining records that included using computer systems and performing basic arithmetic calculations.

Substitutions:
Successful completion of a formal vocational education program in accounting or bookkeeping will substitute for the required experience.

Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month).

Accounting Technician Level 2:
One year of entry technical level accounting or clerical bookkeeping experience.

Substitutions:
Certification as an Accounting Technician from an accredited college will substitute for the required experience.

Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) if it includes at least 6 semester/8 quarter hours in Accounting.
