Job Description

Summary

This is a paid summer internship at the Library of Congress where students or recent graduates work remotely for 10 weeks, gaining hands-on experience in library operations and professional skills to boost their careers.

It's ideal for motivated undergrads or grad students interested in government, research, or public service who can commit to a full-time schedule.

Participants will attend a mandatory orientation and contribute to real projects while learning from experts.

Key Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required; permanent residents ineligible
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program, or graduating between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025
  • Available for full-time remote work Monday-Friday during core hours (6:30 am – 6:00 pm EST) from June 1 to August 7, 2026
  • Must attend mandatory orientation on June 1, 2026, with no exceptions
  • Submit federal-style resume, responses to vacancy questions, and legible college transcripts (unofficial acceptable initially)
  • Provide two professional references attesting to skills, work ethic, and teamwork (contact info at interview)
  • Pass a favorable personnel security/suitability investigation, responding promptly to deadlines

Full Job Description

The Library of Congress Internships (LOCI) program is a seasonal, 10- or 12- week paid internship program that enables undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates to gain experience through applied learning and professional development opportunities that advance the academic and career pursuits of participants.

Must be a U.S. citizen. Permanent residents are ineligible for consideration. MUST be a U.S.

Citizen currently enrolled at time of application in a degree-granting program of study at an accredited institution of higher learning (community college, college, university, or tribal college) at the undergraduate level or graduate level, AND/OR have graduated or will graduate between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025.

MUST BE AVAILABLE TO REPORT TO WORK REMOTELY FOR FULL TEN-WEEK PERIOD from June 1 through August 7, 2026. MUST be available to attend mandatory orientation on Monday, June 1, 2026. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Must be available to work a full-time schedule, Monday – Friday during the Library’s core business hours: 6:30 am – 6:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.

Appointment/retention is subject to a favorable evaluation of a personnel security/suitability investigation.

Note: If selected, you must assist us to expedite processing of your application by responding quickly (within one week) to the Personnel Security Department.

Your transcript will be used to certify your eligibility for the program. Official transcripts will be required if selected for the position.

Transcripts must be issued by the college or university, and must include your name, the name of the institution, and the courses and course dates.

Screenshots, JPEGs, Word or other text documents, and stand-alone course lists are not acceptable.

Failure to submit the required legible documentation at the time of application will result in disqualification.

If you do not have an unofficial transcript at your disposal, please submit another document from your institution and/or registrar’s office to certify your current enrollment.

Certifications via Clearinghouse are acceptable to verify enrollment.

Two (2) references (name, email and phone) that can attest to the applicant's proficiency, skills, work ethic, reliability, quality of work, and capacity to work on teams.

The position description number for this position is 404866. This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

The 2026 Summer session of the Library of Congress Internships Program include options for virtual, remote project work.

Interns hired under this announcement will be expected to conduct work from their home location.

This program offers undergraduate, graduate students and recent graduates insight into the environment and culture of the world's largest and most comprehensive repository of human knowledge.

Interns will be exposed to a broad spectrum of library work: copyright, preservation, reference, access standards, and information management.

Near the end of their appointments at the Library, the interns join together to present their accomplishments and share their insights on the impact of their work.

The assignments will span many professional fields at the Library, including information technology, human capital, event planning, communications, collections support and research.

Interns work with Library staff on mission-critical projects that utilize the interns’ existing skills.

Interns are exposed to additional opportunities to expand their skills through special assignments, professional development training and workshops, mentoring, and other enrichment activities.

Interns participate in a wide range of projects offered across the Library of Congress that are designed to challenge and strengthen the skills of emerging professionals and fulfill the mission and vision of the Library of Congress.
