Full Job Description

If so, then this position could be a great opportunity for you! The South Carolina Department of Agriculture is hiring a Wholesale Food Safety Officer for the South Charleston County region. As a Wholesale Food Safety Officer your duties will include:
  • Ensuring foods and cosmetics are manufactured, packaged, and marketed under safe and sanitary conditions. This includes verifying that products are wholesome and free from contamination, filth, or otherwise unfit substances as well as properly labeled according to current laws and requirements.
  • Inspection of food manufacturers, processors, storage facilities, distributors, and salvagers for compliance with state and federal laws, to include performing advanced specialized inspections of food manufacturers, processors, storage facilities and distributors for compliance with applicable state and federal laws.
  • Investigating consumer complaints and issuing written reports of findings.
  • Reviewing product labels for compliance with requirements and making recommendations for revision.
  • Removing adulterated product from sale (embargo).
  • Ensuring adulterated products have been recalled/withdrawn from market when adulteration / contamination is suspected/determined.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an agricultural field, the natural or physical sciences, public health, or a related technical field.

A bachelor's degree in another field of study and at least two years' directly related work experience may be substituted for the required bachelor’s degree with approval from State Division of Human Resources.

  • Valid state driver's license and the ability to operate a vehicle.
  • Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in food packaging or food science.
    • Knowledge of food industry regulations, data collection, tracking, recordkeeping, and analysis.
    • Two (2) years' of directly related experience or three (3) years' experience in related regulatory aspects of manufactured foods.
    • Specialized training in Seafood HACCP & Better Process Control School.
    • Preventative Controls Qualified Individual training.
    • Experience working within federal contracts.
    • Experience developing and conducting outreach.

    Additional Information

    • Ability to communicate effectively with various audiences and prepare clear concise and comprehensive reports.
    • Must work effectively in a transparent, team-oriented environment and prepare reports / written correspondence with accurate technical regulatory verbiage.
    • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and shift objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
    • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods in extreme heat and cold.
    • Ability to exercise judgement in applying and interpreting policies, procedures, rules and regulations, be detail oriented and highly organized.
    • Extensive in-state day travel using a state provided vehicle.
    • Occasional overnight and/or out-of-state travel required.
    • Selected candidate must successfully complete HACCP, Better Processing School, Preventative Controls Qualified Individual and other job-related training within 2 years of hire.
    • Ability to read fine print on food product labels.
