Full Job Description

Hennepin County is seeking U.S. military veterans to serve as volunteer mentors for participants in the 4th judicial district - Veterans Treatment Court.

This court supports justice-involved veterans who are working to overcome substance use disorders, mental health challenges, and other barriers while completing a court-ordered treatment plan.

Mentors act as trusted allies and role models, helping participants reconnect with the benefits and support they earned through their service.

They meet regularly with their assigned participant and collaborate with Hennepin County Veterans Services and the Veterans Treatment Court team to connect them with community resources and supportive services.

Volunteer veteran mentors are paired one-on-one with a veteran participant where they play a critical role in helping veterans with the primary goals of:

  • Rebuilding stability.

  • Strengthening resilience.

  • Successfully completing Veteran's Treatment Court program.

Location and hours:This Veterans Treatment Court mentor volunteer role is hybrid serving both remotely and meeting in-person at least once per week for 1-2 hours in our community across Hennepin County.

  • Have a veteran status.

  • Support and mentor veterans 1-2 hours per week for one year in Veterans Treatment Court.
  • Successfully complete the virtual mentor orientation and training.
  • Gain knowledge to reduce stigma regarding veteran mental health and substance abuse.
  • Support and back-up other mentors and mentees.
  • Receive support from the Veterans Treatment Court Mentor Coordinator and other staff.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with veteran substance use disorder and recovery and other diagnosed mental illness.
  • Ability to be patient and understanding of the challenges of transitioning from the military.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
