Summary
Each summer, WIC teams up with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to bring fresh, local produce directly to families. Through this partnership, WIC families receive $20 to spend on fruits and vegetables at nearby farmers’ markets.

Stationed in WIC clinics, they support WIC staff by distributing farmers’ market vouchers and guiding families through basic nutrition topics, including how to make the most of their farmers’ market benefits.

Their presence helps families feel confident, informed, and excited about using their vouchers.

The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program runs from June 1, 2026 through September 30, 2026. Volunteers are welcome even if they cannot commit to the entire season.

The ideal commitment is 3 or more hours per week, most weeks between June 3, 2026 and August 30, 2026, offering a flexible way to make a meaningful impact during the summer months.

WIC is especially seeking volunteers with a background in nutrition education or related experience—undergraduate or graduate students in nutrition and dietetics, former WIC staff, and individuals with nutrition degrees are all encouraged to get involved.

In this volunteer position, you will:
  • Provide farmers’ market vouchers to eligible families.
  • Explain the process of how to use vouchers at the farmers’ market.
  • Help families locate a farmers’ market that is convenient to them.
  • Hand out promotional materials such as stickers and vegetable seeds.
  • Inform families about what produce is currently available at farmers’ markets.
  • Educate on the nutritional value of various fruits and vegetables.
  • Provide ideas on how to select, prepare, and serve fruits and vegetables.
  • Use Language Line interpreters (or your existing language skills) with families who speak languages other than English.
  • Communicate closely with WIC nutritionists.
Training & supervision provided by a WIC supervisor.
