Summary
This volunteer role involves helping adults and seniors at Hennepin County Libraries with basic computer and tech issues, like using devices, browsing the internet safely, and working with common software.
Volunteers also guide people on job searching, such as building resumes and applying online.
It's ideal for patient, friendly individuals who enjoy teaching simple tech skills and communicating clearly, even if they're not tech experts.
Key Requirements
- Strong communication skills to explain technology and job topics simply to diverse groups, especially adults and seniors
- Ability to assist with basic device navigation, including computers, smartphones, tablets, and e-readers
- Knowledge of secure internet use, such as Wi-Fi connections, account sign-ups, email/social media logins, and password changes
- Familiarity with common software like Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Google Suite (Drive, etc.)
- Experience or willingness to help with library resources like e-books, printers, and scanners
- Support for job search tasks, including resume creation, online job searching, and application processes
- Willingness to learn and commit to unpaid volunteer hours with provided training and supervision
Full Job Description
Hennepin County Library is looking for volunteers to assist library patrons (primarily adults and seniors) with their computer and technology questions during Tech Help Tutor programs at multiple library locations. The service helps patrons improve their basic computer/smart device and job search skills through one-to-one assistance.Library locations in need: Please click here.

In this volunteer role, you will:
- Assist patrons with logging in and navigating a computer or smart device (smartphone, tablet, e-reader).
- Help patrons securely navigate the internet (connecting to Wi-Fi, sign up for online accounts, login to email or social media account, and changing passwords).
- Assist patrons with common software (i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Suite)
- Guide patrons in using library resources/technology (like e-books/printers/scanners)
- Support patrons with job search assistance: resumes, searching the internet for jobs, and job applications.
Need to Have: The ability to communicate with a wide range of people and be able to break down technology and job-related topics in an accessible way.
Nice to Have: A basic understanding of technology or willingness to learn as you go, including navigating smart devices (smart phones, e-readers, tablets) and common software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive, etc. The ability to speak another language in addition to English.
Training provided by Program Coordinator, and supervision by designated Hennepin County Library staff member.
