Job Description

Summary

This job involves repairing and restoring damaged school buses, trucks, and other vehicles to their original condition, including fixing body parts, estimating repair costs, and inspecting vehicles after accidents.

It also includes helping manage parts inventory and supporting the overall maintenance of school transportation.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in vehicle body repair who is physically strong, detail-oriented, and willing to get a commercial driver's license.

  • Four years of mechanical experience in automotive or related repair, or equivalent training
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and move 125-pound objects 30 feet
  • Proficiency in operating power, hydraulic, and electronic equipment
  • Must obtain valid Class A or B CDL with Tank Vehicle, Passenger, and Air Brake endorsements within 120 days
  • Pass criminal background check, drug screening, and SDE/USDOT medical exam
  • Experience in vehicle body repair, damage assessment, and refinishing

Full Job Description

The person in this position will rebuild/repair damaged vehicles (buses, trucks, cars, etc.) and restore these vehicles to original equipment manufacture (OEM) requirements as needed.

This will include component repair, panel and section repairs, and section and overall refinishing. Evaluate and diagnose special damage problems.

Prepare estimates of accident damages to department-owned vehicles.

Perform complete inspection of vehicles to insure estimate includes all repairs necessary to return vehicles to pre-accident operational status. Notify supervisor of any unusual or significant damages.

Assist Shop Clerk in the ordering, maintenance, and inventory of parts and supplies for Body Shop.

Provide other services in support of the school bus maintenance mission or the Office of Transportation mission as instructed by the supervisor.


This position is located in the Office of Transportation/Florence Bus Shop.

Requirements

Work experience involving the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment.

Qualifications

Four (4) years of mechanical experience in automotive or related repair; or any combination of training and experience that would enable an applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required to lift objects weighing 50 pounds and to move objects weighing 125 pounds 30 feet. Must be able to operate power, hydraulic, and electronic equipment.

Must possess or acquire within 120 calendar days a valid Class A or B CDL with Tank Vehicle, Passenger and Air Brake endorsements, and criminal background check.

Successful candidates will be extended an offer of conditional probationary employment, at which time they will be required to submit to and pass a drug screening for illegal drugs and must pass the SDE/USDOT medical exam.
