Full Job Description

As part of Facilities Management, Fleet Services supports the City of Tacoma's transportation requirements by managing a safe, efficient, cost effective diversified fleet of vehicles and construction equipment, including solid waste and landfill equipment.

The City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Utilities are recruiting to establish an Eligible List for the classification of Vehicle Parts Assistant, which will be used to fill vacancies as they occur for a period of one year. This position is responsible for locating and procuring parts and services, assuring that the items meet predetermined specifications and standards; performing record-keeping work in the receipt, storage, issuance, and inventory of parts, materials, tools and equipment; and maintaining and updating a computerized inventory control. Most or all positions require working a swing or night shift.

The City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Utilities Fleet Services work groups supports the City of Tacoma's transportation requirements by managing a safe, efficient, cost effective diversified fleet of vehicles and construction equipment.

Public Works Department: We provide essential public services by designing, building, maintaining, and preserving public infrastructure that enhances the quality of life for the people of Tacoma in a fair, responsive, sustainable, and equitable manner.

Public Works Fleet Services operates 2 separate shops: The Fleet Operations facility is the primary maintenance shop for the City's vehicles and equipment, servicing the Tacoma Police Department, Public Works, Environmental Services, Etc.

The Fleet Annex shop, located at the City's solid waste facility, maintains the heavy-duty refuse fleet.

Tacoma Public Utilities: We provide electric service to the city of Tacoma, Fircrest, University Place, Fife, parts of Steilacoom, Lakewood, Joint Base Lewis-McChord and unincorporated Pierce County as far south as Roy.

The Fleet Operations facility is the primary maintenance shop for the City's vehicles and equipment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Determine quantity and/or type of parts to order according to established guidelines and knowledge of automotive parts; determine when substitute parts can be used; order and reorder as necessary.
  • Inspect and process parts received against invoices, way-bills and specifications to assure conformance with quality and quantity requirements.
  • Gather and fill parts orders by requisitions from maintenance personnel.
  • Issue stock parts according to established guidelines and procedures.
  • Stock and restock parts; determine and remove obsolete parts from shelves; organize stock area and build shelves as required; arrange and prepare items for packing and shipping.
  • Maintain and update computerized parts inventory control system as required, assuring appropriate parts are kept in stock; maintain vendor files and related records, files and reports; utilize maintenance computer system to research vehicle information.
  • Participate in physical inventories as required.
  • Coordinate daily activities with the assigned supervisor and exchange information daily with the Fleet Parts Technician
  • Maintain a tool check out system for specialized maintenance tools; repair tools as requested.
  • Pick up and deliver parts as requested.
  • Keep work area safe, clean and orderly.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Make minor repairs to tools and equipment.

Requirements

An equivalent combination to:

Graduation from high school or equivalent ANDTwo years' experience involving inventory control and purchase of a wide variety of automotive and heavy equipment parts and supplies in an automotive or distribution facility.LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:Valid Washington State driver's license at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.

Qualifications Vehicle and heavy duty equipment parts and equipment.

  • Perform minor repairs on tools and equipment.
