Full Job Description

This is a seasonal program that runs from approximately May 2026 through September 2026.

The Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) University Region is looking for Facilitators and Team Leaders to lead, empower, and mentor a group of individuals 16+ years old as part of our Summer Youth Group (SYG).

The SYG is centered around enhancing communication skills, participating in diverse teams, developing good work habits, and learning about employment opportunities at MDOT.

As a Facilitator or Team Leader in the SYG, you will act as a liaison between MDOT staff and SYG team members; oversee training and work assignments; assist with safety training; and oversee compliance of program rules and regulations.

Facilitator Position ($17.50/hr.)

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Organize the summer youth group and plan types of work to be performed, including supplying teams with necessary activity materials.
  • Assist with, participate in, or lead activities and resolve issues as they arise.
  • Serve as a role model for all participants.
  • Record and maintain timekeeping records, as well as vehicle usage and maintenance activities.
  • Follow instructions given by MDOT personnel.
  • Assist team leaders with completing necessary reports and forms.
  • Assist in training team members and team leaders and ensure safety and program rules are followed, including enforcing MDOT’s Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace, Sexual Harassment, and Hostile and Violence-Free Environmental policies.
  • Arrive on time, promote safety, and take pride in all team accomplishments.

Team Leader Position ($16.50/hr.)

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Act as a lead team member, driving a department vehicle to and from work sites while directing and supervising a team of two to five members in daily activities.
  • Ensure safety and program rules are followed, including enforcing MDOT’s Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace, Sexual Harassment, and Hostile and Violence-Free Environmental policies.
  • Seve as a role model for team members.
  • Participate in or lead sessions/activities as needed.
  • Record and maintain timekeeping records, as well as vehicle usage and maintenance activities.
  • Follow instructions given by MDOT personnel.
  • Arrive on time, promote safety, and take pride in all team accomplishments.
  • Act as a facilitator back-up as needed.

Facilitator/Team Leader eligibility requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Pass a pre-participant drug test.
  • 40-hour work week availability.
  • Ability to work outside and transport up to 45 pounds.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain and work on roadsides.
  • Willingness and ability to follow instructions.

MDOT does not participate in E-Verify and does not sponsor visa applications.
