Full Job Description

The Mackinac Bridge on a sunny day with blue skies and trees in the forefront with the MDOT logo and the MDOT webpage address.

This position performs maintenance activities on State trunk lines within the right of way. This position operates equipment used in performing listed tasks. This position is required to perform all tasks in a safe manner and participate in the TMW Work Element Program. This position performs roadside activities of spraying pesticide, planting, trimming, and removal of trees and shrubs, as well as maintenance activities at all roadside parks and rest areas. This position performs bridge/culvert maintenance activities involved in repairing substructure and superstructure of concrete and steel. Assists Region Electricians in the maintenance and/or installation of energized traffic devices. During the winter, duties continue but may include working at one of the University Regions highway maintenance garages performing snow/ice removal and related road maintenance. Overnight travel may be required outside of University Region. This position operates a Motor Vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds when operating aerial trucks, snowplow trucks, etc.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 7

One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.

Transportation Maintenance Worker E8

Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 (Recruit)

Possession of a Commercial Learner’s Permit at the time of hire. Continuing employment requires possession of a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air break restrictions which must be obtained within twelve months from the date of hire.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8

Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at the time of appointment to the position.

**If the selected applicant has a CDL Group A or B with or without the N or X endorsement, they will be required to obtain a CDL Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.

The MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program.

This position is a Test-Designated Position.
