Full Job Description

This is a seasonal program that runs from approximately May 2026 through September 2026.

The Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) University Region is looking for Team Members who are 16–18-year-old high school students and recent high school graduates as part of our Summer Youth Group (SYG).

The SYG is centered around enhancing communication skills, participating in diverse teams, developing good work habits, and learning about employment opportunities at MDOT.

As a Team Member in the SYG, you will have the opportunity to perform work activities that may include, but are not limited to, enhancing landscaping; weeding and removing vegetation around guardrails and road signs; painting Park-N-Ride lot posts; cleaning rest areas/welcome centers; repairing and maintaining rest areas features (picnic tables, posts, etc.); enhancing roadside parks and scenic turnouts; removing litter; and assisting with erosion-control measures and cleaning out outlets.

Team Member eligibility requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in high school with a proposed 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA or a recent graduate. Transcripts confirming this will be required at time of interview.
  • At least 16 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid school issued work permit, if applicable.
  • Pass a pre-participant drug test.
  • 40-hour work week availability.
  • Ability to work outside and transport up to 45 pounds.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain and work on roadsides.
  • Willingness and ability to follow instructions.

MDOT does not participate in E-Verify and does not sponsor visa applications.
