Are you interested in working in the field in the Blue Mountains region of WA collecting vegetation data and conducting mortality investigations?
This is an opportunity to assist on a research project examining elk population dynamics and the nutritional landscape.
WHAT TO EXPECT -
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:

Working Conditions:
Work setting: Fieldwork involves hiking over uneven terrain, often for long distances (up to 10 miles), while carrying heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs.).
May encounter variable weather conditions, including heavy rain, snow, fog, and extreme heat. Travel to field sites may require driving on partially flooded or snow-covered roads.
Most time is spent navigating to survey locations and collecting data at individual sites for several hours.
Mortality investigations may involve hazards such as encounters with predators, exposure to disease, and adverse weather conditions. Periodic office work on a computer is also required.
This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
Schedule: This position is full-time, working 40 hours per week. The standard work schedule requires flexibility; may be assigned work hours at any time within a 24-hour period. Work shifts are not fixed and may vary based on operational needs.
Travel requirements: Frequent travel from the assigned duty station to survey sites. This position will cover large spatial areas daily to complete surveys.
Customer Interactions: Communicating with the public, private landowners, and co-managers regarding elk population management and the current research project.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
Option 1: Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
Option 2: Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
License: Valid driver’s license.
