Requirements

In this position, you will carry out regular, scheduled, and emergency maintenance on tunnels and their related facilities to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Your tasks will involve cleaning gutter lines, inlets, drainage systems, garages, plazas, offices, and fan floors, as well as clearing debris from upper air-chamber areas and roofs. Additionally, you will be responsible for painting and repairing structural elements and maintaining the grounds by picking up litter and mowing. These activities are crucial for the overall maintenance and functionality of the tunnel infrastructure.

Alongside maintenance work, you will also respond to incidents that disrupt traffic flow by helping motorists and first responders, clearing debris, towing or pushing disabled vehicles, and performing minor repairs on vehicles. You will need to keep a close watch on tunnel conditions for any traffic problems, carbon monoxide levels, fires, and over-height vehicles. Effective communication with PennDOT staff and first responders—whether by phone, radio, or in person—is vital for maintaining situational awareness and ensuring safe, coordinated responses.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment, rotating 24/7 operations.
  • Work hours are varied and are based upon operational considerations. Shifts can range from the following: 9:30 PM - 5:30 AM; 5:30 AM - 1:30 PM; 1:30 PM - 9:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $52,097 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Special Requirements:

  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
  • All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
  • All positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
