Summary

The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Transportation Technician 3s to perform skilled engineering tasks in support of transportation projects across office, laboratory, and/or field environments.

These roles operate with general direction regarding schedules and priorities while exercising independent judgment in selecting work methods and resolving routine technical problems.

Successful candidates will apply established engineering policies, procedures, and standards to ensure high-quality project execution and documentation.

Long hours, weekend and holiday assignments, and alternate shift schedules, including night work, may be required to meet operational needs. Travel assignments may require overnight stays out of town for extended durations.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician 3 will:

  • Inspect and test materials on complex highway construction projects to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Document field activities, pay notes, testing results, force accounts, and other construction records with accuracy and completeness.
  • Monitor project schedules and budgets and advise the Field Engineer of status, emerging issues, or potential impacts.
  • Obtain and maintain required materials testing qualifications (e.g., ACI Concrete Tester Grade 1, WAQTC HMA and Aggregate) within established timelines.
  • Contribute to survey layout activities and assist with planning and scheduling inspection assignments for team members.
  • Mentor junior inspectors on inspection procedures, contract standards, and construction administration practices.
  • Prepare correspondence, calculations, pay documentation, subcontract approvals, and other project records to support accurate and timely contract administration.
  • Coordinate with contractors, local agencies, and internal WSDOT offices to support communication, project documentation, and payment processing.
Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Foundational Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of civil, structural, geotechnical, or transportation engineering principles. Ability to apply engineering concepts to real-world scenarios.
  • Technical Interpretation and Analysis: Skilled in reading, analyzing, and interpreting contract plans, specifications, manuals, and other documents in accordance with project requirements and engineering standards.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Proficiency: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to a variety of stakeholders, including engineers, contractors, and the public.
  • Inspection Documentation Skills: Experience in conducting roadway or bridge construction inspection and documentation in accordance with industry standards.
  • Field Materials Testing Proficiency: Proficient in conducting construction and field materials testing (e.g., soil, asphalt, concrete) in accordance with industry standards.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the above, the following are also required:

  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, and up to 75 pounds with assistance.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Professional Engineering Preparation: Demonstrated foundational knowledge in civil or structural engineering through academic coursework or related preparation.
  • Construction Inspection Expertise: Ability to apply inspection practices and field observation techniques to roadway or bridge construction activities.
  • Technical Research & Analysis Skills: Ability to utilize and apply the Design Manual, Construction Manual, Plans Prep Manual, Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, and other WSDOT manuals and policies when developing and documenting the design or construction of transportation projects.


In addition to:

  • Certification as a Traffic Control Flagger
