Full Job Description


Responsible for the engineering, accurate preparation and design of work zone traffic control plans and specifications for construction and maintenance projects. Ensures the preparation of all work zone traffic control plans and special provisions comply with schedule requirements. Coordinates with representatives from throughout the DOT and the FHWA as necessary.

Conducts field reviews which may include inventory and evaluation of signing, pavement marking, traffic control and crash attenuators. Assists in the compilation of information from the highway projects office, the construction and maintenance offices District personnel, and the FHWA to ensure preparation of accurate work zone traffic control plans and special provisions.

Reviews the designs of all work zone traffic control plans prepared for construction and maintenance projects prepared by consultant firms to ensure the designs meet all requirements of the Department, the FHWA, and the MUTCD. Also provides input to engineers of consultant firms to better assure the preparation of accurate work zone traffic control plans.

Assists with the policies and procedures for The Rule of Work Zone Safety and Mobility. Develops and prepares work zone transportation management plans to meet the requirements of SCDOT and FHWA.

Conducts training in work zone traffic control procedures and requirements. Assists Regional Production Group staff as necessary with conceptual traffic control plan development.

Attends Preconstruction conferences and addresses contractors and resident construction engineers. Assists with semi-annual work zone traffic control field reviews. Performs other related duties as assigned. I








Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and five (5) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel.

This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling.

This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
