Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting road and bridge construction projects to make sure contractors follow the rules and plans, while also preparing reports, checking materials, and handling basic tests in the field.

It's a hands-on role with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, often outdoors in tough conditions near traffic.

Full Job Description

Performs certified inspection work in at least two SCDOT disciplines, ensuring contractor compliance with applicable plans, standards, specifications, etc. Assists with inspection of all aspects of road and bridge construction. Prepares all routine project reports and forms in a timely manner as needed. Compiles quantities for payment. Obtains and processes construction samples and performs field checks and tests, as needed. Makes routine interpretation of plans and specifications. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
