Job Description

Summary

This job involves supervising a lab that tests asphalt materials for road projects, coordinating with teams to collect samples, analyzing data from tests, and keeping records to meet certification standards.

It's a hands-on role with some leadership over contractors, ideal for someone detail-oriented with experience in lab testing or engineering support who doesn't mind physical work outdoors.

  • Comfort walking extended periods on rough terrain, working near traffic, and in environmental hazards

Full Job Description

Performs complex testing related to asphalt mixtures in the Office of Materials and Research Asphalt Verification Laboratory in West Columbia.

Includes testing for binder content, bulk specific gravity, maximum specific gravity, air voids, VMA and gradations.

Coordinates sampling of asphalt with District Asphalt Managers, Office of Materials and Research senior field inspectors, and other department personnel.

When applicable, supervises contracted CE&I employees performing sampling and testing for the lab.

Performs statistical analysis of data collected from SCDOT projects and test results obtained from Asphalt Verification Lab testing.

Maintains records for accreditation of the lab in accordance with AASHTO R-18 and SCDOT test procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A high school diploma and four and one-half (4.5) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
