Job Description

Summary

This job involves assisting with land surveying for transportation projects, such as mapping boundaries, staking out road alignments, and preparing reports, while also training junior team members and handling fieldwork in various conditions.

A good fit would be someone with a background in engineering or surveying who enjoys hands-on outdoor work, has strong attention to detail, and is comfortable leading small tasks under supervision.

Full Job Description

Performs duties as assistant crew chief including the limited oversight of subordinate crew members and delegation of tasks as needed to accomplish surveying duties. Trains others in day-to-day surveying operations to insure efficiency and quality of work.

Assists in planning field survey by making preliminary inspection of the job site including identifying ground conditions pertinent to planning the survey procedures; researching records in courthouse to gather property information; locating vertical and horizontal datum ties and establishing project alignments.

Perform office duties including preparing property closure sheets and special survey drawings or maps; reducing survey field data and checking for accuracy; reviewing notes for accuracy and completeness; office drafting of property layout showing the adjacent property boundaries and ownership in relation to survey lines; performing computations and adjusting survey data to SC State Plane Coordinates; developing and preparing computer survey files needed for CADD development of project and preparing weekly and monthly reports.

Proficiently performs duties at all lower-level positions (instrument man, level man, rodman, note keeper, etc.) as necessary. Proficiently operates all surveying equipment. Performs manual duties as needed including using bush axe to clear brush from line of sight and measurement. Trains others in day-to-day surveying operations to insure efficiency and quality of work.

Performs drainage investigations and/or recommendations for hydrographic surveys, as needed, from drainage area and pipe and culvert size.

Under the direction and supervision of a SC Registered Land Surveyor and the survey crew chief, performs boundary survey field work and research for the location of property boundary lines. Utilizes the GPS equipment to perform surveys for preliminary design purposes and the location of wetland boundaries. Performs survey to stake project right of way lines for the appraisal and acquisition of new right of way. Performs duties to provide aerial mapping ground controls surveys.

Trains in matters relating to highway design and factors affecting location, such as land use, safety and cost.

Cleans and repairs equipment; checks and adjusts survey instruments.

Maintains daily work log. Enters working time and charge codes into time sheet in ESS. Maintains personal information in ESS.

Performs other related duties as required including driving to and from job sites.


















Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
