Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping to manage and supervise maintenance contracts for roads and public spaces in South Carolina, including creating bids, inspecting work on things like sidewalks and drainage, and tackling special projects like pipe repairs or accessibility upgrades.

It also means responding to public complaints, working in emergencies or bad weather, and being ready for physically demanding tasks outdoors.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management (or equivalent year-for-year relevant experience)
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license
  • Ability to supervise personnel and manage contract inspections for right-of-way maintenance (e.g., sidewalks, drainage, chemical/mechanical work)
  • Experience developing maintenance contracts, including data gathering, scope of services, and bid packages
  • Capability to assist in investigating public complaints and completing complex projects like trenchless pipe repair, ADA upgrades, and sound wall repairs
  • Willingness to work extended hours, overtime, nights, weekends, or 12-hour shifts during emergencies or inclement weather
  • Physical ability to handle demanding tasks such as bending, climbing, walking on uneven terrain, and exposure to traffic, weather, and noise

Full Job Description

At Richland Maintenance, assists witth supervising the Contract Management Section. Develops maintenance contracts to include gathering data, creating a scope of services, and formulating bid packages on items within the SCDOT Right-of-Way. Supervises personnel responsible for inspections of contract work associated with sidewalks, drainage structures, chemical/mechanical right-of-way. Assists Resident Maintenance Engineer in investigating maintenance problems/complaints received from the public. Assists Resident Maintenance Engineer in completing complex projects such as trenchless pipe repair, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) facility upgrades, and sound wall repairs. Works during emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management. Relevant experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.

Additional Information

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
