Summary

This role involves overseeing the maintenance and improvement of facilities and equipment for a state transportation district, including inspecting shops, managing repairs, and ensuring projects follow safety and legal standards.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management
  • Seven (7) years of engineering or construction management work experience (or approved equivalence)
  • Ability to inspect facilities and equipment for compliance with standards, including parts inventories, maintenance schedules, and recordkeeping
  • Experience supervising equipment installation, maintenance, and capital improvement projects
  • Knowledge of state regulations, building codes (e.g., Standard Building Code, NEC, Fire Code, ADA), and procurement laws
  • Physical ability to perform field inspections, including walking rough terrain, climbing, and working near traffic or in environmental hazards
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and respond to emergencies outside normal hours

Full Job Description

Inspects county maintenance shops for compliance with existing standards with respect to parts inventories, preventative maintenance schedules, recordkeeping, and workmanship. Makes final decision regarding major equipment repair. Inspects facilities for compliance with existing standards with respect to appearance and upkeep of buildings, grounds, and other appurtenances. Supervises installation and/or maintenance of equipment at facilities within the District, to include maintenance buildings, construction offices, etc. Works with Resident Maintenance Engineers and District Office staff to compile and prioritize annual equipment requests for submission to the Director of Maintenance. Specifies and recommends new equipment that can better meet the needs of the Agency and monitors equipment performance and usage. Provides equipment specification as needed to ensure these needs are met. Responsible for capital improvements throughout the District. Performs field inspections to assess and prioritize the District's capital improvement needs to obtain cost estimates for budgeting purposes. Ensures that capital improvement projects are in compliance with state regulations and laws and Agency policy. Works with Resident Maintenance Engineers and contractors to develop plans and specifications and ensures that projects meet all applicable codes (i.e., Standard Building Code, NEC, Fire Code, Fire Marshal Regulations, ADA standards, etc.) Ensures that projects are completed according to specifications and in a timely manner. Approves requisitions and purchase orders submitted to the District Office for procurement of fixed assets and equipment. Ensures compliance with State Procurement Code. Advises Resident Maintenance Engineers with conformance to DHEC regulations concerning fuel storage and shop operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and seven (7) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
