Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting construction sites and permits for road and infrastructure projects in South Carolina, ensuring everything follows safety and environmental rules.

You'll also help the public with questions about permits, driveways, and traffic issues, and step in to support the team during bad weather or when the manager is away.

It's a good fit for someone detail-oriented with hands-on experience in construction or fieldwork who doesn't mind physical work outdoors near traffic.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of related experience in transportation, construction, or permits
  • Ability to conduct field inspections on complex permits involving traffic control, concrete, asphalt, earthwork, environmental, and safety practices
  • Physical ability to bend, kneel, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs, walk on rough terrain, and work near moving traffic
  • Comfort working in inclement weather, including snow and ice, and outside normal hours or weekends
  • Skills in reviewing, inspecting, and recommending approval for encroachment permits
  • Experience assisting with public inquiries, FOIA requests, and permit processing

Full Job Description

Conduct field inspection on complex permits requiring firm understanding of technical aspects including traffic control, concrete, asphalt, earthwork, environmental and safety practices. Review, inspect, and recommend for approval moderate level encroachment permits. Provides assistance to public requests for information and guidance on encroachments permit applications, driveway installations and reviews requests for Freedom of Information Act research, traffic control complaints, and guidance. Assists Permits Manager in processing new permits and approved permits when needed. Assists Permits office staff with guidance and research in the absence of the Permits Manager. Required to work during snow and ice or inclement weather to provide support to the office operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
