Summary

This entry-level engineering role involves helping oversee construction projects for roads, bridges, and related infrastructure in South Carolina, ensuring contractors follow plans through inspections, testing materials, and verifying measurements on-site.

It also includes office tasks like preparing reports and using software to document work, plus assisting during emergencies or bad weather.

  • Familiarity with computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Site Manager, AWP, and SCDOT Construction Forms
  • Physical ability to sit/stand for long periods, travel, bend/stoop/climb, walk rough terrain, work near traffic, and handle outdoor weather/noise; availability for extended hours, overtime, nights, weekends, and emergencies

Full Job Description

Assists with reviewing all contractor's work to ensure that work is in accordance with plans and specifications. Performs in specialized inspection area of earthwork, asphalt, concrete and foundations. Performs in traffic control and erosion inspections.

Reviews sampling material requirements and test results to ensure that adequate samples have been obtained to represent the materials used during construction.

Monitors contractor and department personnel staking of construction items. checks contractor performed staking of accuracy and ensure that any necessary changes are made in a timely manner. Performs in the use of topographical surveys on material pits and computes quantities for payment. Computes grades for all types of bridges and roadway construction projects. computes pavement grades, curb grades, pile cut-off elevations, cuts and fill benchmarks and other pertinent elevations.

Performs office work involving engineering data as well as compiling quantities, preparing reports, and as-built construction plans. Utilizes Microsoft Office, Site Manager, AWP, SCDOT Construction Forms and other computer programs for proper documentation of construction activities.

Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12 hour shifts.

Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel.

This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling.

This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
