Summary

This job involves inspecting construction sites for roads and bridges to ensure everything follows state rules, managing small to complex projects from start to finish, and leading survey teams to measure and mark out work areas.

Full Job Description

Conducts certified field inspections in various specialized areas. Obtains and maintains inspector certifications in these specialized areas. Ensures that all installed work meets SCDOT specifications and that the inspections are carried out and documented per SCDOT. Manages small and complex bridge and roadway projects to ensure that all work is performed in accordance with all SCDOT rules, regulations, specifications, and policies. Ensures that all projects are adequately inspected and that all project-related paperwork, including daily work diaries, pay quantities, material samples and certifications, and monthly estimates are submitted in a timely manner. Ensures that contractors and/or municipalities are in compliance with environmental and traffic control regulations. Achieves satisfactory scores on projects inspected by the interoffice, District Office, or Headquarters Quality Management Team. Assists with various project management functions such as completing estimates, project closeout, change orders, internal Quality Management Team audits, etc. Leads survey party in completing survey verification and layout on road and bridge construction projects as well as pre-construction layout tasks on resurfacing projects. Work will include tasks such as computing and documenting roadway and bridge grades, calculating earthwork volumes, locating and verifying foundation items, compute ring slopes, staking right-of-way, stationing roads, marking full depth patching and staking guardrail. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
