Job Description

Summary

This entry-level engineering role involves inspecting construction sites for road and bridge projects to ensure everything follows plans and standards, collecting material samples for testing, and handling office tasks like reports and surveys.

It also includes monitoring staking accuracy, computing quantities, and helping during emergencies or bad weather, often requiring fieldwork in tough conditions.

Key Requirements

Full Job Description

Inspects assigned contractors work to ensure that work is in accordance with the plans, contract, SCDOT Standard Specifications, and Standard Drawings. Performs work in specialized areas of asphalt, earthwork, and foundations. Completes traffic control and erosion control inspections and associated reports. Obtains samples and certifications of materials to submit to the laboratory for testing and acceptance. Inputs sample and certification data in Site Manager. Reviews sampling requirements and test results to ensure that adequate samples have been obtained to represent materials used during construction. Performs office work involving engineering data as well as compiling quantities, preparing reports and as-built construction plans. Monitors contractor and department personnel staking of construction items; checks contractors staking for accuracy and ensures that any necessary changes are made in a timely manner. Performs topographical surveys on material pits and computes quantities for payout. Computes grades for all types of bridge and roadway construction plans. Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12 hour shifts.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management. Relevant experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel.

This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling.

This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
