The Opportunity

Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 2 Project Engineer to support the System Electrification Program and the construction of next-generation electrified vessels.

This project position plays a key role in ensuring engineering project documentation, coordination, and compliance activities are managed accurately and efficiently to support successful vessel delivery.

By maintaining critical project information and facilitating communication between project partners, this role helps ensure construction efforts align with contract requirements, technical standards, and WSDOT policies.

The work performed directly contributes to the safe, reliable, and sustainable operation of the nation’s largest ferry system.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Transportation Engineer 2 will:

  • Review, organize, and store project documentation and communications; verify deliverables are complete and accurate by contract documents and communicate deficiencies to the team.
  • Assist in auditing contractor documentation and documenting contract changes to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
  • Ensure project documents are stored in the correct location and accessible to support project coordination and compliance.
  • Assess and disseminate contractor communications in Unifier; assist in prioritizing and responding to transmittals and submittals in a timely manner.
  • Export and review Unifier task reports and support document control tracking and reporting.
  • Schedule and host team meetings, create agendas, and document attendance and meeting content.
  • Create and maintain spreadsheets and logs for deliverable tracking, revision control, change management, and project documentation.
  • Assist the project team with documentation, coordination, communication, and other project-related support activities.
  • Uphold WSF’s strategic priorities (Service Excellence, Improved Communication, and Empowered People) and values (Serve, Grow, Trust, Respect, and Navigate), ensuring they are embedded in WSF’s culture through leadership actions.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Contract Document Interpretation and Compliance
    • Ability to read, interpret, and apply contract specifications, technical documents, and project requirements to ensure documentation accuracy and compliance with contract and project standards.
  • Document Control and Submittal Management
    • Demonstrated experience managing document control processes, including Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals, transmittals, change documentation, revision control, and maintaining accurate project records.
  • Project Controls and Documentation Tracking
    • Experience supporting cost tracking, progress reporting, revision control, and maintaining logs or tracking systems to ensure project documentation and deliverables are accurate, complete, and current.
  • Document Coordination and Issue Resolution
    • Ability to coordinate with internal project teams and contractor representatives to manage document workflows, resolve documentation issues, and ensure timely completion of project deliverables.
  • Design Change and Configuration Tracking
    • Experience tracking design changes, revisions, and as-built documentation to ensure project records accurately reflect current project status and approved modifications.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance Support
    • Knowledge of quality control processes and experience supporting compliance with project specifications, technical standards, and contractual requirements.
  • Project Management and Document Control Systems Proficiency
    • Proficiency using project management and document control tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, and document management systems (e.g., Unifier or similar), or demonstrated ability to learn and apply new systems.
  • Project Coordination and Communication
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, facilitating information sharing, and clearly communicating documentation requirements, issues, or process improvements.
  • Meeting Coordination and Administrative Support
    • Experience scheduling and facilitating project meetings, preparing agendas, documenting meeting minutes, and supporting project coordination activities.
  • Organizational, Analytical, and Risk Awareness Skills
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain organized records, analyze documentation for accuracy and completeness, and proactively identify and communicate potential project risks or issues.
  • Project Controls and Reporting Knowledge
    • Knowledge of project controls, program management, and reporting practices used to support project tracking, performance monitoring, and compliance.
  • Service Orientation and Continuous Improvement
    • Demonstrated commitment to supporting team needs, maintaining accountability, and continuously improving processes through learning, collaboration, and proactive problem solving.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Construction Sequencing and Project Delivery Knowledge
    • Understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, and project delivery processes for large-scale marine, industrial, or infrastructure projects.
  • Shipyard Standards and Regulatory Compliance Knowledge
    • Working knowledge of shipyard construction practices, marine or industrial construction codes, regulatory requirements, and applicable technical standards.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
