The Opportunity

The South Central Region (SCR) is seeking several motivated and detail-oriented individuals to support WSDOTs mission by delivering safe, cost-effective, and practical transportation solutions.

These positions work both independently and collaboratively to develop plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for roadway projects in compliance with state standards and design policies, while coordinating with technicians, interns, consultants, and specialty groups to produce accurate, computer-aided design deliverables.

In these roles, you will prepare quantities and cost estimates, draft special provisions, manage schedules, review work for quality, and ensure projects are delivered on time and to standard.

Our top candidates will bring strong technical roadway design knowledge, proficiency with engineering design software, and the ability to communicate and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, the Transportation Engineer will:

  • Utilize construction plans and specifications for the inspection of highway construction projects.
  • Monitor and document the contractor's work for one or more major aspects of a project such as excavation, embankment, grading, drainage, asphalt and concrete paving.
  • Complete inspector daily reports, force account sheets and other documentation.
  • Measure and calculate quantities to prepare field note records that support payment for activities inspected.
  • Perform materials sampling and testing in accordance with various WSDOT requirements.
  • Serve as lead inspector in charge of a moderately sized project or may act as roving inspector for concurrent smaller projects.
  • Lead team in preparing for and conducting meetings as needed for projects.


Qualifications

These are Transportation Engineer 2 positions.

However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the positions at a lower level in the classification series based on candidate qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.


To be considered for these opportunities, the following are required:

  • Foundational Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of civil, structural, geotechnical, or transportation engineering principles. Ability to apply engineering concepts to real-world scenarios.
  • Technical Interpretation and Analysis: Skilled in reading, analyzing, and interpreting contract plans, specifications, manuals, and other documents in accordance with project requirements and engineering standards.
  • Computer and Engineering Software Literacy: Proficient in the use of engineering technology, including computer-aided drafting (CAD) and other engineering software applications used for design, analysis, and documentation.
  • Inspection Documentation: Proficient in conducting roadway or bridge construction inspection and documentation in accordance with industry standards.
  • Field Materials Testing: Proficient in conducting construction and field materials testing (e.g., soil, asphalt, concrete) in accordance with industry standards.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Proficiency: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to a variety of stakeholders including engineers, contractors, and the public.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the required competencies above, the following are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • The ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • The ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Professional Certification/Academic Preparation: Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or formal education in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, transportation, traffic engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Design/Construction Engineering Proficiency: Demonstrated knowledge and experience with exposure to design, construction, traffic, materials, program management, or other WSDOT related fields.


Important Notes

  • This recruitment will be used to fill six (6) vacancies and may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.

    For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.

    Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.

  • These positions offer flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • These are Transportation Engineer 2 positions.

    The base salaries for each level are: Transportation Engineer 2: $71,472 – $96,144

  • Transportation Engineer 1: $64,776 – $87,048
