This job involves working as a toolmaker in a naval shipyard, where you'll design, build, and repair specialized tools and equipment using various machines and manufacturing techniques.
It's a hands-on role focused on precision work to support ship production and maintenance.
A good fit would be someone with strong mechanical skills, experience in machining, and the ability to work independently from technical drawings.
You will serve as a a TOOLMAKER in the MECHANICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
TEMPORARY PROMOTION NOT TO EXCEED 2 YEARS AND MAY BECOME PERMANENT WITHOUT FURTHER COMPETITION Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION, such as: Setting up and operating specialized and precision machines such as jig grinders, internal and external thread grinders that are common to the trade; Working from technical documentation and drawings to design, manufacture and/or repair new or existing components, fixturing, and tooling through the safe operation of various manufacturing processes and equipment, especially additive manufacturing equipment.
Applying advanced shop mathematics and formulas to determine dimensions and geometries.
Designing and/or manufacturing components from various types of materials, using a range of manufacturing methods.
Reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, Production Engineering Memos (PEM), and other technical specifications.
