The Recreation Division inspires all people to reach their full potential through recreation programs and activities.

We operate over 50 recreation facilities (community centers, teen centers, pools, school-based learning centers, environmental learning centers, and boating and sailing centers) and provide opportunities for people to play, learn, and lead healthy, active lives.

Our programs and events include fitness and athletics, licensed childcare and preschool, swimming and boating, youth development and job preparation, academic enrichment, and more -- including programs designed for older adults and people with disabilities, as well as grant and partnership programs designed and implemented with immigrant and refugee communities.


Outdoor Activations and Mobile Recreation (OAMR) Unit in partnership with community groups identify and support the wants and needs of their communities.

Built on trust, community, engagement, and the desire to strengthen the health of your neighborhood’s population, OAMR uses interactive, educational, and fun activities to promote health and wellbeing.

Recreation Leaders assigned to our City-wide OAMR team develop, plan and implement activities in the following programs.

  • Food and Fitness,
  • Rec In The Streets (RNTS),
  • Summer Playgrounds/Meals,
  • Career Explorations,
  • Enterprise
  • Community Engagement Ambassadors


This position will report to the Food and Fitness Career Explorations Program Coordinator


This position is an integral part of the Outdoor Activation and Mobile Recreation Unit (OAMR) and will work in the following programs


  1. Summer Meals @ Playgrounds-this program works in partnership with Human Services Department, Seattle Public Schools and United Way King County in a Federally funded program to provide youth under the age of 18 with free meals and Activities in parks and playgrounds during the summer out of school time,
  2. Career Exploration- these programs goals are twofold it runs year-round and has been developed to prepare young adults with the opportunity to explore careers in the field of recreation with the goal of employing them within the department it includes elements of job shadowing, soft skill development preemployment and mentorship.

Requirements

  • Provide high quality outdoor recreation and Job readiness programming, activities, and lessons to affinity groups, family camps, and individual participants ranging in age from children to adults.
  • Supervise and coach up to 15 individual High School and College interns in a Job Training Program
  • Effectively communicate with, instruct, train, and coach individuals and groups in a developmentally appropriate manner to manage risk and ensure inclusion and physical, mental, and emotional safety.
  • Build strong rapport with participants, partners, and staff; foster positive group development; create structure and draw learning from experiential activities.
  • Model cultural humility and celebrate diversity, effectively working with people of different identities, backgrounds, experiences, and abilities.
  • Manage set-up and break-down/cleanup of program materials, gear, equipment, and facilities including pre/post inspection of activity areas, equipment, gear and program supplies.
  • Transport participants in 14-passenger Van to and from program areas.
  • Participate in occasional overnight shifts, such as overnight backpacking or multi-day programs.
  • Participate in a variety of internal meetings to maintain knowledge of industry requirements, support optimal customer care, and maintain team collaboration.
  • Maintain required minimum qualifications for the position such as licenses, certifications, or credentials and participate in internal meetings and trainings to collaborate with the staff team, partners, and customers and maintain knowledge of industry requirements, and best practices.
  • Adhere to all city policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • Requires working outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • May require strenuous physical activity.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:

Requires one year experience in a community-based recreation program and an associate degree in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work).


Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience working with and coaching with youth aged 13-21 years old in employment readiness setting
  • Skilled in facilitating discussion circles, and age-appropriate activities that foster belonging, discovery, and exploration of youth participants
  • Experience in teaching and leading recreational activities

License, Certification and Other Requirements

  • Current State of Washington driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • First Aid and CPR Certificate required within 60 days of hire

The full salary range for this position is $34.08 to $45.64 per hour.
