Job Description

Summary

This job involves installing, maintaining, and repairing fiber optic and copper communication systems for the Navy in Norfolk, Virginia, including troubleshooting network issues and supporting video and data services.

It's a hands-on role for someone who works independently with technical tools and blueprints.

A good fit would be an experienced technician comfortable with outdoor and indoor work in a military setting.

Determining vehicles, tools, material requirements, work methods, manpower, and skill requirements to be used to complete assigned work.

Reading building blueprints, telephony infrastructure drawings and diagrams.

Using tools such as electrical and manual drills, torque wrenches, screwdrivers, long-nosed pliers, fiber optic glass cleavers, and other specialized tools of the trade.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will serve as a Telecommunications Mechanic, Infrastructure Maintenance Division, External Support Department, in Norfolk, Va.
  • You will perform inside and outside plant work of the division, which is tasked with accomplishing construction, installation, maintenance, and repair services of fiber optics and copper communications infrastructure.
  • You will use various types of electronic test equipment, analyze system failures, isolate and document causes of outages.
  • You will troubleshoot, test splices for shorts, opens, transposed/reversed pairs, crosses, splits, shield continuity, shield to earth grounds, bonding and grounding, on copper cables.
  • You will maintain accountability of all items, vehicles, tools, and test equipment assigned to the section.
  • You will provide technical support for planned projects consisting of switching and transport networks supporting analog, digital, voice, data, and video teleconference services.
