The Department of Transportation is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Technical Assistant to join our team.

In this role, you will support critical inspection activities on highway and bridge construction projects, helping ensure that all work meets approved construction codes, plans, standards, and specifications.

Requirements

In this role, you will support inspection and documentation activities throughout all phases of transportation construction to help ensure projects meet required standards for quality, safety, and compliance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with inspections of transportation construction work, including checking grades, elevations, and stake-outs with contractors and surveyors.
  • Support project documentation, verify contractor work, and follow requirements outlined in the Project Office Manual (Publication 2) and Publication 408.
  • Use computers and iPads to complete daily records and enter information into an electronic documentation system.
  • Coordinate with Department staff, agencies, legislators, and the public to support effective project administration.
  • Complete Project Site Activity Reports (PSAs), perform calculations, and prepare required construction documentation.
  • Help resolve field construction issues as they arise.
  • Perform standard inspections of materials such as concrete, asphalt, drainage components, and other construction materials.
  • Assist with project reporting, track progress and schedules, and monitor material quantities and testing.
  • Perform calculations, draw sketches, note field plan changes, and maintain inspection and quality control reports.
  • Provide visual compaction testing of soils, aggregates, and related materials during construction.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
  • You will report to project field office locations within one of the following PennDOT Engineering District 8-0 counties: Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, York, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, or Perry County.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Other Requirements:
  • This particular position also requires possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
