Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of scientists to manage and direct toxicology programs that protect public health in military settings, including identifying health risks from toxins and planning strategies to address them.

A good fit would be someone with strong leadership skills, a background in toxicology or related sciences, and experience in public health or environmental safety, who enjoys coordinating complex studies and guiding teams.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in toxicology or a related biological, medical, or veterinary science, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology
  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level, such as identifying public health threats, reviewing employee evaluations, assigning work, and reviewing policy guidelines
  • Ability to direct and coordinate subordinate supervisors managing teams of biologists, toxicologists, and technicians
  • Experience in strategic planning, development, and implementation of occupational and environmental health programs

Basic requirement for Supervisory Toxicologist: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes identifying public health threats, assisting with reviewing evaluations of employees, assigning work to employees, and reviewing policy guidelines.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13). Major Duties:

  • Serve as Director of Toxicology (TOX) for the DCPH-A, responsible for the control, coordination, and management of the Center’s and DHA Public Health’s toxicological mission.
  • Within established policy and objectives, identify goals, strategies, and programs to support the vast and varied public health toxicology requirements of the DOW.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of subordinate supervisors who manage teams of professional and support civilian and military biologists, toxicologists, and technicians engaged in performing complex qualitative and quantitative studies.
  • Review evaluations of non-supervisory employees rated by subordinate supervisors and assures reasonable equity of individual employee performance objectives, standards, and ratings among subordinate divisions.
  • Assist the DCPH-A Director, and DEPDIR in the strategic planning, development, and implementation of the occupational and environmental health toxicological mission supporting both the deployment and garrison environments.
