Summary

This job is for a deputy director at a naval museum in Virginia, where you'll help lead the team in planning programs, managing historical artifacts, and creating exhibits about Navy history in the local area.

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SUPERVISORY MUSUEM CURATOR (DEPUTY DIRECTOR) in the NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND, HAMPTON ROADS NAVAL MUSEUM of HAMPTON ROADS NAVAL MUSEUM.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Using electronic databases for artifact management; 2) Performing technical research to provide historically accurate responses to inquiries; 3) Identifying artifacts and writing storylines based on scholarly research; 4) Locating sources of artifacts, recommending acquisition items for purchase, and negotiating the donation, purchase or loan of appropriate objects for a museum; 5) Delivering lectures and formal presentations and giving formal tours to individuals , students, groups and organizations.

6) Developing short and long-term plans, managing museum programs, and supervising subordinate staff members in the implementation of plans and programs.

  • You will assist the Museum Director in the formation of overall museum objectives, long range plans and programs and the assessment of their effectiveness.
  • You will research, document, and interpret the history of the Navy in the Hampton Roads region, performing independent scholarly research to identify artifacts and write storylines.
  • You will oversee the collections manager in Hampton Roads Naval Museum's (HRNM) artifact lending program to Naval and civilian organizations, monitoring the movement and conditions of artifacts.
  • You will initiate, plan and develop ideas and storylines for exhibits relative to HNRM's mission.
  • You will represent HRNM at professional museum workshops, training seminars and conferences.
