About the Position: The incumbent serves as Supervisory Medical Support Assistant (Office Automation) over a group of employees performing medical clerk, receptionist, record keeping, files management, office automation, and miscellaneous clerical duties in a large Womack Army Medical Center - Department of Surgery.

The clinic provides services in a variety of medical specialties. Who May Apply: Only applicants who meet one of the employment authority categories below are eligible to apply for this job.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist.

A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three (3) or fewer errors.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing clerical and administrative support functions in a medical facility such as maintaining health records.

answering and directing phone calls, scheduling medical appointments, screening patients to determine eligibility, and operating office automation software to input patient demographics.

OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Management, Public Health Administration, or related fields such as Business or Public Administration with course work in Healthcare Administration.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9.

Add the two percentages.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Clerical Leadership Management Support Office Operations Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).

Major Duties:

  • Assign work, daily, weekly or monthly to employees, providing special instructions as necessary for new or unusual assignments.
  • Review and resolve complaints from subordinates.
  • Evaluate work performance of employees and prepare work performance appraisals.
  • Merge individual health care provider (HCP) templates into a Master Schedule system, and schedules daily appointments as the Patient Appointment System Master Scheduler
  • Briefs Unit Commanders, soldiers, family members and groups on clinic policies, procedures, and issues.
  • Coordinate with clinic chiefs and the supervisor to prepare, maintain, and update appropriate access codes and appointment menus.
  • Operate Office Automation equipment (i.e., electronic typewriter, word processor, and personal computer) and systems such as MHS Genesis, DMHRSi, and ATAAPS to prepare a variety of office documents and functions.
