Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of engineers to plan, test, and evaluate mechanical systems on ships at a naval shipyard, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely during major testing programs.

It's a supervisory role where you'll coordinate with other experts, manage multi-million-dollar projects, and advise on how your work fits into larger shipyard operations.

A good fit would be an experienced mechanical engineer who enjoys leading projects in a technical, team-based environment, especially with a background in ship or industrial systems.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-12 level or equivalent, planning and leading projects for testing mechanical systems in ship operations
  • Professional engineering background in mechanical systems, with knowledge of shipboard testing and evaluation
  • Ability to coordinate with nuclear engineers, ship's force, and other stakeholders on testing interfaces and readiness
  • Supervisory skills to establish priorities, monitor work, and make adjustments for effective execution

  • Experience advising managers on how engineering work impacts broader shipyard programs and public/environmental welfare

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Supervisory Mechanical Engineer in the Engineering & Planning Department of PSNS and IMF.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional engineer planning and leading projects related to the test and evaluation of mechanical systems and equipment for ship systems testing operations.

  • You will effectively coordinate with Nuclear Chief Test Engineers for matters involving interface testing with systems under their cognizance and with Ship's Force with respect to test readiness and support of shipboard testing.
  • You will advise higher level managers on problems involving the relationship of the work of the function to boarder shipyard programs and the effect on those programs
  • You will be directly responsible and accountable for the technical adequacy, proper sequencing and effective execution of a multi-million-dollar test program involving all non-nuclear electrical and mechanical systems.
  • You will execute significant projects representing an important segment of the agency’s operating programs, or affecting the welfare of the public and/or the sustainability of natural resources and the environment.
  • You will establish priorities and monitor work assigned making adjustments as determined necessary.
