Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of engineers and technicians at a naval shipyard to design, repair, and maintain propulsion systems on ships, with a focus on troubleshooting mechanical issues and ensuring projects meet deadlines.

It's ideal for an experienced mechanical engineer who enjoys supervising others and has hands-on knowledge of naval machinery, especially in nuclear-powered vessels.

Candidates should be organized planners who can handle both technical details and team management.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-12 level or equivalent in mechanical engineering related to naval propulsion and auxiliary machinery
  • Proficiency in applying mechanical engineering principles to nuclear propulsion plant maintenance and construction

  • Knowledge of temporary service systems and programs like Level I and Steam Plan Cleanliness

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SUPERVISORY MECHANICAL ENGINEER in the Propulsion Plant Machinery & Planning Yard (Code 266), Mechanical Engineering and Planning Division (Code 260), Office o f Chief Engineer (Code 240), Engineering and Planning Department (200), ofNORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying mechanical engineering concepts, principles, methods, precedents and techniques as it pertains to Naval main propulsion machinery, auxiliary machinery, and related mechanical system Experience in administrative supervisory functions, such as making plans, assigning work, setting objectives, and policy and procedure development.

Experience in temporary service systems, and programs such as Level I, and Steam Plan Cleanliness.

Experience in design and technical knowledge of engineering aspects as it relates to Nuclear Propulsion Plant Maintenance and Construction.

  • You will provide technical assistance to the NNSY waterfront in troubleshooting all systems, equipment, and components related to main propulsion.
  • You will supervise mechanical engineers and technicians engaged in the development o f engineering technical work documents and providing on-site engineering support for the repair and modification.
  • You will assign work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration o f the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of employees.
  • You will develop performance standards and performance appraisals, and assures they are completed within the required time Limits.
  • You will review existing projects/programs and ensures their effectiveness and redefines their requirements or eliminates them when necessary to ensure program goals and objectives are met.
  • You will develop short and long range plans and objectives to accomplish the Branch's and Shipyard's mission.
