Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of firefighters on a military base, overseeing daily operations, responding to emergencies like fires and hazardous material incidents, and ensuring everything runs smoothly during shifts.

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: Current Federal Employees: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) overseeing operations in the areas of emergency response for fire suppression, hazardous materials, and emergency medical situations; 2) managing fire personnel during shift operations; 3) assisting with fire inspections to determine cause of fire and extent of damage.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

External Applicants: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) exercising command and control over emergency scenes, including incidents involving fire suppression, hazardous materials, and emergency medical services; 2) providing direct supervision and leadership to a team of firefighters, including assigning duties, managing schedules, and ensuring operational readiness; and 3) conducting preliminary investigations into fire origin and cause, and documenting the extent of property and environmental damage.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires you to possess and maintain at the time of application the following DoD, Pro-Board, or IFSAC Firefighter Certification levels: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Awareness, Hazardous Materials Incident Command, Driver/Operator Pumper.

This position requires you to possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification issued by the State of Maryland or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (NREMT-B) (or any state the abides by the DOT curriculum, and then must pass the Maryland State MIEMMS tests with the one year probationary period.

Major Duties:

  • Directs the activities of assigned shift by assigning individuals to required crews according to functional assignments (i.e., Company Officers, Driver/Operator and Firefighters).
  • Provides advice and counsel to employees relative to work and administrative matters. Initiates requests for filling vacancies or hiring additional personnel; selects or participates in the selection of new employees.
  • Manages shift responsibilities by planning work operations for shift tour and emergency basis in accordance with master schedule of operation, necessary equipment maintenance, and inspections.
  • Determine cause of fire and recommends determined conclusions. Estimates extent of damage and prepares formal report on all fires occurring during the tour.
  • Makes fire prevention inspections throughout the installation, noting all violations or discrepancies, either directs the immediate correction or reports condition to supervisor.
  • Maintains records on operations, personnel, equipment, and supplies during tour assignment.
