Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lead firefighter who oversees a team responding to fires, medical emergencies, and hazardous material incidents at a Navy base in Indiana.

The role involves directing crews during crises, managing safety programs and equipment, and ensuring the team's performance aligns with military goals.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-07 or GS-08 level (or equivalent) directing firefighting personnel and equipment in emergencies
  • Experience managing fire department programs like breathing air systems, personal protective equipment, health and safety, or accreditation
  • Skills in setting employee performance goals, appraisals, development planning, and communicating objectives to subordinates
  • Ability to direct fire suppression, emergency medical care, ambulance transport, hazardous materials response, and other emergencies
  • Possess all required certifications: Firefighter I/II, Hazmat Awareness/Operations/IC, Driver Operator Pumper/Aerial, Fire Officer I/II, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I (DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard accredited)
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to pass background checks for federal service

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER in the Fire and Emergency Services of NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY CRANE.

Outside applicants claiming VEOA or VRA (i.e., those without current or prior Federal competitive or excepted service): Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Directing/deploying firefighting personnel and equipment during emergencies and non-emergency situations; 2) managing fire department programs such as breathing air systems, personal protective equipment, purchasing/credit card holder, health and safety, fire department accreditation, or similar programs; 3) Applying management objectives and goals for employees including performance objectives and appraisals, individual development planning, and command mission, and to effectively communicate those goals and objectives to subordinates; and 4) Directing attack for the effective control and extinguishment of fires, managing emergency medical patient care and ground ambulance transport for single- and multi-patient incidents, managing hazardous materials and special operations emergencies, and managing other threats and emergencies in order to save lives and property, and preserve the mission of the Installation and Region.

This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, HazMat IC, Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator Aerial, Fire Officer I, Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector I, and Fire Instructor I.

These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. Also requires National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-EMT.

  • You will determine levels of staff, equipment, and other resources needed to provide departmental services and programs.
  • You will Instruct training for members of other fire departments.
  • You will brief senior leaders or other employees on matters on firefighting actives, personnel, and equipment.
  • You will prepare reports for the supervisor concerning fire runs, training, maintenance, inspections, or other topics.
  • You will direct firefighters during structural, aircraft, and shipboard fire suppression and extinguishing.
  • You will identify performance, progress, disciplinary, and training needs of crew members.
