Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist has the overall responsibility for coordination and performance of both invasive and non-invasive cardiology.
The Supervisor DRT works closely with cardiologists, clinicians, technologists, nurses, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction.
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification.
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R).
Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable].
Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
[In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] Education.
Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Credentialing Standards.
Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel.
Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S.

DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-10 The technologist] functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff.
[The technologist] evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations.
[The technologist] informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area.
[The technologist] directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff.
Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Experience.
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Perform the full range of supervisory duties including responsibility for staff work assignments, performance evaluations, recommendations of appointments, awards, advancements, and when necessary, disciplinary actions.
Responsible to set up and coordinate continuing educational needs and evaluate semi-annual/annual equipment and procedure competencies.

Make short- and long-term supply, equipment, and major space alteration recommendations, and prepare specifications for equipment purchases and requests.
Must possess ability to make and implement major managerial recommendations for invasive and non-invasive cardiovascular service such as organizational improvements including changes in structure and delegation; maintain realistic cost/benefit ratios; and policy and procedure changes to improve service to patients.
Assist Cardiologist/Electrophysiologist with complex procedures equipment/ instrumentation used in diagnostic catheterization, angioplasty, stent placement, intravascular ultrasound, permanent pacemaker, echocardiogram.
transesophageal/transthoracic echocardiography and defibrillator insertion, electrophysiology procedures, and other related invasive and non-invasive cardiology procedures.
Collaborates and supervises a limited function laboratory for blood gas evaluation and coagulation testing.
Maintain QA, QC for whole blood oximetry and coagulation testing and this includes proficiency testing for CAP to maintain Clinical Laboratory Accreditation.
This lab is under direction of the College of American Pathologists utilizing the CAP quality control survey necessary for JCAHO accreditation.
Encounters conditions and hazards usual to patient care and in addition, exposure to radiation from radiographic equipment.
Must possess the physical and mental health to meet the demands of the position. Must be able to wear lead apron for extended periods of time.
Engages in physical activities that involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, balancing, and kneeling to provide patient care in a changing environment.
Assists in patient transport to and from various areas in the facility (inpatient and outpatient). Determines shift assignments and staffing needs.
Handles patients, physicians, and visitors inquiries and concerns. Acts as liaison between staff, departments, management, patients, physicians, and visitors/guests.
Maintains adequate supplies used in the department.
Responsible for accomplishing minor repairs such as replacing cables, lead wires, styluses, adjusting filters, and making routine calibrations on all equipment.
Repair orders for more serious equipment malfunctions are recognized and are referred to service repair individuals.
Operation of Pacemaker Programmable Stimulator to provide programmed premature stimuli synchronized at selected intervals to asynchronous pacing pulses or to sensed spontaneous depolarizations under the direction of the attending Cardiologist.

Assures all equipment is operational prior to patient procedures, contacts Biomedical Engineering/IRM/Clinical Manager and Physician when equipment is inoperative or malfunctioning.
Responsible for explaining exams to competent patients in terms the patient will comprehend as well as understanding potential hazards that may occur as a result of the exam.
Assist with patient care, clinical documentation, operation of specialty equipment during clinical emergencies.
Perform quantitative determinations of arterial and venous blood oxygen and carbon dioxide contents and/or arterial oxygen saturations utilizing a blood oximeter and/or oxygen consumption computer.
