Key Requirements

  • Six years of active engineering practice post-graduation, including at least two years as a licensed Professional Engineer
  • Experience in a Project Manager role or higher after obtaining PE licensure
  • Master's degree in Engineering may substitute for up to two years of experience
  • Ability to perform on-site inspections, including walking on rough surfaces
  • Position requires Tier II Emergency Management readiness for Houston Public Works

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This posting is for a supervising engineer position within the Road Safety Group in Houston Public Works (HPW). We are a small, passionate group that works to promote multimodal safety and design on the roads in Houston so that roads are safe for everybody, including people walking, bicycling, driving, and taking transit.

We collaborate closely with many partners, including the Houston Planning and Development Department, METRO transit agency, Harris County, private developers, contractors, and neighborhood associations to ensure that projects are coordinated.

In this role, we can have significant impacts on a wide variety of significant projects in the 4th largest city in America.

We also work directly with other City’s departments for rapid roadway improvements to operations and safety. Specific duties of this position will include but are not limited to:

  • Perform and Oversee investigations for new traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, and assign investigations to graduate engineers
  • Identify and design roadway safety improvement. Submit work orders for implementation when appropriate, work with Project Delivery group for larger, capital projects
  • Participate in refinement of City traffic and roadway standards to ensure the city utilizes international best practices
  • Prepare and deliver presentations in public and private forums
  • Review Traffic Impact Analyses (TIAs) from private developers
  • Review capital projects and interagency projects to ensure that the latest multimodal safety standards are incorporated in all road improvement projects
  • Research and prepare responses to project inquiries from citizens and other city personnel
  • Develop and interpret codes, ordinances, and specifications.
  • Lead the creation of a crash rate database to prioritize safety improvements
  • Participate in Road Safety Audits along specific corridors and locations
  • Respond to sensitive inquiries and complaints from both external and internal stakeholders regarding traffic safety and congestion.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position routinely is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing etc. May require walking on rough surfaces during on-site inspections and investigations.

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires graduation from an approved curriculum in engineering by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers with satisfactory standing.

OR
Requires graduation from an engineering or related science curriculum at a recognized institution of higher education, other than a curriculum approved by the Board and passage of the eight-hour fundamentals of engineering examination prescribed by the Board.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six (6) years of active practice in engineering work after graduation from an approved curriculum in engineering, with two of the years as a licensed Professional Engineer are required, or in a role of Project Manager or higher obtained after licensure as a Professional Engineer.

Substitution: A Master's degree in Engineering may be substituted for up to two years of the above experience requirement.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. A specific branch of engineering (such as civil, mechanical, structural, etc.) may be required.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
