Summary

This summer internship at Gwinnett County's Water Resources Department offers college engineering students a chance to gain practical experience by working on real projects in water operations and plant engineering.

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering (e.g., Civil, Mechanical, Structural, or related field)

  • Valid driver's license from state of residency
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills (preferred)
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment (preferred)
  • Available to work 40 hours per week from June 1 to July 31, 2026 (dates subject to change)
  • Willing to deliver a formal presentation on project outcomes at the end of the internship

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Intern for Summer 2026.

This internship provides hands-on experience supporting our Operations and Technical Services and Plant Engineering teams.

The selected candidate will work on a defined project, receive structured direction and mentorship, and gain real-world exposure to engineering practices in an industrial/manufacturing environment.


This is an excellent opportunity for a college student pursuing an engineering degree to apply classroom knowledge to practical business challenges while developing technical, analytical, and professional skills.

Essential Duties
  • Support daily activities and initiatives within Operations and Technical Services, and Plant Engineering groups
  • Assist with process improvement, data collection, analysis, and documentation
  • Participate in troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Lead a relevant, hands-on project designed to address real operational challenges and provide practical, real-world engineering experience
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, supervisors, and production personnel
  • Present a final project summary and key learnings to the leadership team at the conclusion of the internship
Internship Structure
  • Summer intern will work 40 hours per week
  • Internship dates are June 1 – July 31, but are subject to change at the discretion of the Department
  • Interns are required to deliver a formal presentation to the leadership team summarizing project outcomes, insights gained, and overall internship experience at the end of the internship
Hourly rate
$20.36 per hour

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering (e.g., Civil, Mechanical, Structural or related field)
  • Valid driver’s license from state of residency
Preferred Qualifications in addition to the above minimum qualifications
